Time For Tanghulu!
Share
The viral treat taking over social media is not only delicious but also incredibly easy to make! Whether you’re planning a party, looking for a fun activity with the kids, or just craving a sneaky snack, Tanghulu is a must-try. This traditional Chinese candied fruit transforms ordinary fruit into a crunchy, glass-like delight with a satisfying sugary coating.
Ingredients:
• Fruit of your choice (Strawberries and grapes are our faves)
• 2 cups of granulated sugar
• 1 cup of water
• Ice water bath
• Wooden skewers
• Medium-sized pan
Notes:
Use a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio if making a larger batch.
A shallow pan makes it easier to coat the fruit than a deep pot.
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Fruit
• Wash and thoroughly dry your fruit. The fruit must be completely dry for the sugar coating to stick properly.
• If using larger fruits like kiwi or apple, cut them into bite-sized pieces.
• Thread the fruit onto wooden skewers.
Step 2: Make the Sugar Syrup
• In a medium-sized pan, combine sugar and water.
• Heat over medium heat until the mixture reaches 135-165°C (275-329°F). Avoid stirring, as it may cause crystallisation.
• No thermometer? No problem! Test the syrup by dipping a spoon or wooden skewer in, then quickly placing it into the ice water bath. If it hardens instantly, it’s ready.
Step 3: Coat the Fruit
• Once the syrup reaches the correct temperature, remove it from heat.
• Quickly dip each fruit skewer into the syrup, ensuring an even coating.
• Immediately dip the coated fruit into the ice water bath for 2-5 seconds to cool and harden.
Step 4: Enjoy!
• Once hardened, your crunchy, shiny Tanghulu is ready to eat!
Tanghulu is a fun and impressive treat perfect for parties, picnics, or a unique homemade snack. Give it a try and bring a taste of Chinese street food to your home. Enjoy!
